Evita Closing Jan 26th

After 26 previews and 337 regular performances, Evita, starring Ricky Martin and Elena Rogers, has announced that it will be closing on January 26th, 2013. After previously announcing that the show would be recast following the departure of its current stars, producer Hal Luftig has stated “Our extensive search for a new cast presented the significant challenges of not only replacing a high-caliber trio of stars but also synchronizing the schedules of potential replacements with that of the production. Despite going down the road with a variety of artists, the planets have simply not aligned for us to engage the right talent at the right time. Therefore, we have made the decision to end this incredible journey on a high note on January 26 with our original stars intact”

The closing of this show is no great surprise. It has had lackluster ticket sales and, even with headlining star Ricky Martin, has been at the TKTS discount booth since near the beginning of its run. While we won’t necessarily be sad to see it leave we’d like to think of all the things we wouldn’t have had without it. Forbidden Broadway’s dead on impression of Elena Rogers, Ricky Martin’s very attractive self presenting at “Gypsy of the Year” or its social media contribution, the #SIP. So we say to Evita … #RIP
