AMÉLIE, A NEW MUSICAL CELEBRATES OPENING NIGHT
AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S AHMANSON THEATRE
PRIOR TO BROADWAY ENGAGEMENT

“A SPARKLING MUSICAL AND AN ENCHANTING ACT OF THEATRICAL REINVENTION. Phillipa Soo is exquisite. Every time she opens her mouth to sing, the stars in Paris’ night sky shine brighter. The music provides a magic carpet of orchestral strings upon which the production floats at will.”

– Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times

“Magical realism, this packed-with-sparkle show could be just the whipped cream you’ve longed for to top this dessert-like story.”
– Alysia Gray Painter, NBC

“A lovingly crafted confection, impressive in its execution and endearing in its simplicity. This adaptation only emphasizes how universal is the need to touch, and be touched by others.”
– Jordan Riefe, The Hollywood Reporter

Here’s what the critics had to say:

Entertainment Weekly
By Marc Snetiker
“Amelie is a voyeuristic delight, a sweet story of finding love in both personal and practical ways. Director MacKinnon is endlessly clever in her swift musical staging.”

NBC Los Angeles
By Alysia Gray Painter
“Prepare to enjoy ditties from Daniel Messé, Nathan Tysen, and a book by Craig Lucas. If you dug the flick but long for an added dimension of sound and story, the on-stage spectacular could be just the whipped cream you’ve longed for to top this dessert-like story.”

San Francisco Chronicle
By Robert Hurwitt
“A dreamy movie becomes a dream of a stage musical. Wit crackles and charms fill the house, emanating from the book, lyrics and melodies. The coming-of-age-through-love tale of a radiant, smart but — emotionally — almost cripplingly shy young woman. Messé and Tysen’s captivating, eclectic and humor-tinged songs keep the show moving at a swift clip. Director Pam MacKinnon creates a seamless blend of visual, narrative and performance delights.”

San Francisco Weekly
By Lou Fancher
“Sheer delight! A magical, timeless plunge into love, art, goldfish puppetry, snake-eyed marbles, coin-operated photo booths, Parisian bedrooms, sex shops, cafés, and all manner of desirable targets. Amélie is deft social commentary, too. Craig Lucas’ book bursts with joy, delight, imagination, talent, and tenderness. Skillfully directed by Pam MacKinnon, the production capitalizes on David Zinn’s brilliant, skewed set. Music Director Kimberly Grigsby’s robust delivery of Daniel Messé’s richly harmonic score and slyly clever lyrics by Messé and co-lyricist Nathan Tysen, invigorate the visuals. A charming coming-of-age story about a young woman whose life on the streets of Montmartre is a constant search for connection. Vivacious charm falls into lockstep with nostalgia and poignancy, it’s exactly this dance between absurd escapism, true and false memories and relatable heartache that elevates Amélie.”

AMÉLIE is the new Broadway musical based on the beloved five-time Oscar®-nominated film.

Shy Amélie lives quietly in the world, but loudly in her mind… where life is filled with mischievous adventures, a garden gnome can be a world traveler, a goldfish can be her dearest friend and true love is as magical as she imagines. Longing to connect with others, Amélie covertly improvises small, but extraordinary acts of kindness that bring happiness to those around her. But everything changes when she becomes captivated by a mysterious young photographer. Gathering the courage to follow her heart, she embarks on her biggest adventure yet—a journey out of her imagination and into his arms.

AMÉLIE arrives on Broadway in a heart-lifting and delightfully imagined production that captures all the quirky wonder of the film… no subtitles required!

AMÉLIE, A NEW MUSICAL has scenic and costume design by Tony Award winner David Zinn, co-lighting design by Tony Award nominee Jane Cox and Mark Barton, sound design by Tony Award nominee Kai Harada, projection design by Drama Desk Award winner Peter Nigrini, musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby, vocal arrangements by Kimberly Grigsby and Daniel Messé, and orchestrations by Tony Award winner Bruce Coughlin.
